Attendance
Morning registration Our pupils must arrive by 8:50 am on each school day. This is the official start of the school day when registration starts. Pupils arriving after 9:00am will be marked as late (L) – which still counts as present.
If a pupil arrives late after the registers close due to a valid reason, such as unavoidable medical appointment, their absence will be marked with the appropriate authorised absence code. If a pupil arrives after the close of registration (after 9.10am) they will be marked with the unauthorised absence code 'Late after registers close' (U) for the morning session.
Being late for school reduces learning time.
If your child is 5 minutes late every day, they will miss 3 days of learning each year.
If your child is 15 minutes later every day, they will miss 2 weeks of learning each year.
Afternoon registration The afternoon register is taken at 1:00 pm and will be kept open until 1:10 pm. If a pupil has been out of school during the morning and/or lunchtime session and arrives at school after 1:00pm but before 1:15 pm they will be marked (L) – which counts as present.
If a pupil arrives late after the registers close due to a valid reason, such as unavoidable medical appointment, their absence will be marked with the appropriate authorised absence code. If a pupil arrives after the close of registration (after 1.25pm) they will be marked with the unauthorised absence code 'Late after registers close' (U) for the afternoon session.
End of the school day is 3:15 pm.
Persistent absences
The Government considers any student who has an attendance rate of 90% or less to be a ‘persistent absentee’. Research suggests that a pupil who is a persistent absentee (34 sessions or 17 days) or more over an academic year can mean a losing a full GCSE grade in every subject taken and could therefore significantly impact on a student's life chances. Evidence also shows the importance of regular attendance to support children’s wider wellbeing.
-
90% attendance would be equal to 1 session (half a day) absence per week.
-
90% attendance over 5 years is equal to missing half school year which is a total of 190 sessions (95 days).
